Quiet Life = Mind Your Business

by Pua Palakiko on May 15, 2021

Scripture

1 Thessalonians 4:11,12-and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody."

Observation

If you want to lead a quiet life, mind your own business, work hard and gain respect. I can help but think of the times when I was little and wanting to know what my parents were talking about they would say “mind your business.” It was a rigid way of saying but was a respectful thing to acknowledge. It’s why curiosity kills the cat because it got into places it didn’t need to be.

Here Paul teaches how to lead a quiet life within the Christian community that if you mind your business, you can get work done and your reputation will have credibility everyone knows.

Application

Social media kind of beats the purpose of minding your own business because it showcases another person’s life. I am not going to lie sometimes I think I know my favorite celebrity personally because I believe in the narrative they post. I feel like I know how they feel or I know everything that is going on. But the reality is I don’t! They don’t know me personally and I don’t know them personally!

See, Paul desires to teach the church to pay attention to details of your own life because it keeps you out of drama and you will gain effective work habits which leads you to a quiet life. As I get older I am starting to realize that I don’t have to be involved in everyone’s business and in fact, that’s one of the most liberating things to live by. Leading a quiet life might get noisy in the beginning but eventually, the noise will quiet when I work hard, stay faithful, and love others.

Prayer

Lord,

Make me be about your business more than anything. I prayed let me not be distracted by looking to others of what it is that you’re doing. Father, help me to seek you first and your kingdom. Help me to understand that what’s going on in my life is more valuable to you than me being concerned about what’s going on in everyone else’s life. Father would you guide me and give me the discernment that I need to lead a quiet life. Amen
