Strong Enough

SCRIPTURE:

You are my strength, I sing praise to you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely.

Psalm 59:17

OBSERVATION:

Is God really my strength? Is He the first one I run to when things go crazy? Or do I try and figure it out on my own, only falling to my knees when I’ve exhausted all other options?

I’m hoping David was frustrated. Frustrated that he was trying to do everything right and still Saul was after him. Frustrated that he was defeating the enemy almost single handedly but instead of being treated as the conquering hero he needed to hide in caves and live on the run.

Yet David in what could’ve been a moment of complete frustration these words come, “YOU ARE MY STRENGTH, I SING PRAISE TO YOU…MY GOD ON WHO I CAN RELY.”

David must’ve felt let down. Yes, Jonathan comes to his aid and Michel aids his escape, but the majority fell silent when Saul’s commands were given to kill David. David’s only real hope was in God. His only strength was that God was in control.

APPLICATION:

I often feel let down. People don’t always come through, plans don’t always go accordingly. Yet God is in control and hope is alive. My reliance needs to be on Him, completely, even when the storms of life are raging all around. If I rely on people or things I can’t anything expect more than the limitations that each has. God is my only hope and strength. On Christ the Solid Rock I stand.

How do I move towards a complete reliance on God?

  1. A wise man said trust God and “agape” people. While I will continue to believe in those God has put me in relation with, my complete trust goes to Him alone.
  2. Pursue His plans purposefully. I will continue to plan and move forward giving Him complete control to direct my steps.
  3. Do my part. I can’t just sit around and wait for God to make it happen. While giving Him control I equally need to do whatever it takes to be ready to go at all times.

I’m not strong enough, but He is. My only reasonable response is to praise and settle in the fortress of His will.

PRAYER:

Jesus, I pray the same prayer as Your Warrior King: You are my strength, I sing praise to You. You are my fortress, on whom I can always rely. Thank you Jesus. I put my whole trust in You and commit to fervently pursue You plans. Amen
