The Greatest Man on Earth

by Paul Brown on April 16, 2026

SCRIPTURE:

7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

Matthew 3:7-9

OBSERVATION:

Who is this man that Baptised our Saviour? John the Baptist was a great man, according to the creator of heaven and earth, Jesus. John and Jesus met when they were still in their mothers' wombs, for John leaped in Elizabeth's womb Mary greeted her. He prepared the way for Jesus. This was his mission, and he did it well. Instead of celebrating the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to one of his rallies, he rebukes them, saying, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.” John didn’t just ask for a raised hand but a repentant heart. I raised my hand is a faith step, but it must be followed by faith steps, namely, transformation. The greatest man on earth made it clear. We aren’t Christians because we say we are Christians. We are considered Christians if we produce the fruit of repentance.

APPLICATION:

John the Baptist understood what it meant to live as a son of Abraham. It was not by words and proclamation alone; it needed to be accompanied by a life transformed in the form of action. He recognises that a life transformation is the greatest evidence of true faith. Therefore, we must be warned and warn others from being Christians in title only. Martin Luther said, “faith alone saves, but the faith that saves is never alone.” John the Baptist knew this. Our faith isn’t a mile wide, but only an inch deep. Our faith is everlasting to everlasting, because of trust in an infinite God. He never changes in his infiniteness. God’s love is beyond understanding, according to Ephesians 3:19. “May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” John the Baptist understood this, and he invited us to real Christianity. He invites us to know that God's love surpasses all understanding. I choose to believe in the supreme God. Because true belief in the grandness of our God demands transformation. Like the sun demands that the darkness flee when it rises. I trust Him.

PRAYER:

Lord, would you provide for me eyes to see your greatness so that I may know that your love surpasses knowledge and gain completeness in your. Amen.
