When I Believe It, Then I’ll See It

SCRIPTURE:

“Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

John 20:24-25

OBSERVATION:

There’s a phrase that’s used in our world today that speaks to someone who lacks faith. It’s called being a “Doubting Thomas.” This verse in the Bible is where it originates from. When someone simply won’t believe we call them this. While the others tried to explain to him what they had seen, the absent Thomas claims that he wouldn’t believe it until he not only saw it, but felt it.

APPLICATION:

There’s a saying that goes “I’ll believe it when I see it.” In the life of a believer, that’s not what we are called to do. We are taught that without faith and belief it is IMPOSSIBLE to please God (Hebrews 11:6). Countless times over the course of my life, I seen faith and belief move mountains. When there was nothing I could do but to believe that The Lord would move in a mighty and miraculous way.

Thinking back on the situations and circumstances that have arisen over my life, I can see the hand of God moving when all we had left was to believe. Whether it was the desperate prayers and pleas for a new heart for my brother or the reconciliation of relationships. When we began to believe fervently, is when we saw The Lord go to work most earnestly. However, it took a shift in the way we thought.

We need to change this saying with just a few words: Instead of “I’ll believe it when I see it” we must instead say “WHEN I believe it, then I’ll see it.” I wonder how much would change in our lives if we would simply believe and not doubt (James 1:6).

PRAYER:

Father Almighty. Forgive me Lord when I have lacked the faith You have called me to have. Thank You Lord for speaking to me when it comes to doubt. May I just believe, this I pray, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
