SCRIPTURE:
“Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?”
John 18:11
OBSERVATION:
John 18 is the beginning of Jesus’ arrest and betrayal. Judas arrives with soldiers. Peter reacts impulsively and cuts off a servant’s ear. Everything appears dark, chaotic, and out of control.
Yet Jesus was never helpless.
Even in betrayal, arrest, and suffering, Jesus remained surrendered to the Father’s will. While darkness looked powerful in the moment, God was still accomplishing redemption through it all.
Psalm 112 describes the righteous person as someone who is not afraid of bad news because their heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
That kind of trust is not based on circumstances looking good. It is rooted in confidence that God remains sovereign even in difficult seasons.
APPLICATION:
There are moments in life when situations seem unfair, confusing, or painful. Sometimes darkness appears loud and overwhelming, and we wonder where God is in the middle of it all.
But John 18 reminds me that God can still be working even when circumstances look discouraging.
Jesus was not defeated by darkness. He walked through it with trust in the Father.
And I may not always understand the “cup” God allows in my life — the hard seasons, disappointments, waiting, or suffering — but I can trust that He sees the full picture when I cannot.
Faith is not pretending life is easy. Faith is remaining steadfast even when life is hard.
PRAYER:
Lord, help me trust You even when life feels confusing or painful. When darkness seems loud and circumstances feel overwhelming, remind me that You are still sovereign and still working. Give me a steadfast heart that is not ruled by fear or discouragement. Teach me to walk with surrender and trust, knowing that You are faithful through every season. In Jesus’ name, amen.
