Walking by Faith

SCRIPTURE:

“When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city.
‘Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?’ the servant asked.
‘Don’t be afraid,’ the prophet answered. ‘Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’
And Elisha prayed, ‘Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.’”

2 Kings 6:15–17

OBSERVATION:

In 2 Kings 6, the prophet Elisha was traveling with his servant. One morning, the servant stepped outside and realized they were completely surrounded by the Syrian army. Fear immediately took hold, and he cried out to Elisha, “What are we going to do?”

Elisha saw the same situation, but through spiritual eyes rather than natural ones. Instead of reacting in fear, he prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” God answered that prayer, and suddenly the servant saw the hills filled with the army of the Lord—His power, His protection, and His presence had been there all along.

The circumstances did not change, but the servant’s vision did.

APPLICATION:

I have experienced this truth in my own walk with the Lord.

One Saturday, Pastor John called my husband, Richard, because no pastor was available to lead a portion of the service. I heard Richard say, “Mary can do it.”

Immediately, panic set in. Instead of seeing God’s help, all I could imagine were rows of faces staring back at me. In that moment, I prayed, “Lord, open my eyes. Help me see what You are doing.”

As I stepped forward, it felt as though a soft mist of God’s presence filled the sanctuary. I could no longer see the room clearly—the mezzanine, the front row, the faces. What I sensed instead was His power, His presence, and His protection. Fear and doubt lifted.

When we walk by faith, we move beyond the limits of what we can see with our natural eyes. Our spiritual eyes are opened to what God is already doing.

Faith sees what sight cannot.

PRAYER:

Father, thank You that You are with us. Open our eyes to see You clearly and trust You fully. Teach us to walk by faith and not by sight. Help us to trust Your unseen hand over our visible fears. Amen.
