SCRIPTURE:
“As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.”
1 Peter 4:2

This verse begins with “as a result,” which shows that it is directly connected to what Peter said in verse 1 about suffering in the flesh breaking the power that sin holds over a person’s life. Peter draws a clear contrast between two possible directions a life can take: one lived for evil human desires, and one lived for the will of God. The phrase “the rest of their earthly lives” suggests that a decisive turning point has already taken place, and that what follows should be a settled new direction rather than a string of occasional good choices. It is also worth noting that Peter calls these desires “human,” meaning they can feel natural, familiar, or instinctive, yet he still identifies them as evil, showing that something can feel normal to us without actually being right or good.
APPLICATION:
I love that this verse challenges me to ask where in my life I am still living according to old patterns, such as comfort, approval, control, or personal appetite, rather than seeking what God wants. It calls for an honest inventory that goes beyond simply asking whether I am doing bad things, and instead asks whose will I am actually building my life around from day to day. It also reminds me that my past mistakes do not have to define the rest of my life, and that I can choose today to reorient the time I have left toward God’s purposes. Practically, this means pausing in moments, such as how I spend my time, how I respond to other people, and how I use my money, to ask whether I am defaulting to self-interest or genuinely seeking God’s will.
PRAYER:
Lord, thank You that my past does not have to dictate my future. I me to stay clear from old desires, choosing comfort over obedience and self over surrender. Help me to live whatever time I have left for Your will rather than for my own cravings. Renew my mind each day, give me discernment to recognize when I am slipping back into old patterns, and give me the courage to choose You instead. Let my life increasingly reflect that I belong to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
