Scripture
1 Samuel 17:36-“Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God."
Observation
From a human perspective, Goliath was a Gigantic Problem! He stood over 9’ tall, his armor weighed 125 pounds, and the tip of his spear alone weighed 15 pounds. He challenged Israel – to pick a champion to fight against him. The losers would become the slaves of the winners. Goliath was the single problem, and he threatened to undo the entire nation of Israel.
Here’s the Biblical PRINCIPLE: Just like Goliath, our private sins are never really private. If we don’t conquer them, they will not only destroy us but also wreak havoc and bleed down into our families and even in the church. Sin, even private sin, always has harmful consequences. Goliath was an INTIMIDATING enemy. But see that’s the problem--Saul and his soldiers were viewing the situation with Goliath from a human perspective: This worldly viewpoint would go unchallenged.
But David saw things from God’s perspective, and he challenged Goliath, and said: “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should taunt the armies of the living God?” (17:26, 36). Notice the difference in perspective (contrast)here. This is David’s spiritual perspective! David saw this AS A conflict between God and the forces of evil.
When it comes to our Giant Sin, we need to recognize this as a conflict between God and the forces of evil. Don’t allow this to go unchallenged. Saul and his men saw Goliath and thought, “He’s so big we can never kill him!” David saw the same man and thought, “He’s so big, I can’t miss!” DID YOU KNOW that when David called Goliath an “uncircumcised Philistine,” he wasn’t calling him a dirty name. In the Old Testament, to be uncircumcised was to be outside of the Abrahamic covenant and the promised blessings of God.
Application
Biblical APPLICATION (Spiritual Perspective is this): If I ever want to start cutting down some of those Goliath problems in my life, I have to start calling it what God calls it. That’s the same thing David did. I will NOT conquer it if I DO NOT see things from God’s perspective.
Prayer
Lord my prayer is to help me see things the way You see them and conquer my sin the way You would want me to have victory over them. Amen.
