More Than Sacrifice

SCRIPTURE:

“I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.”

Matthew 12:6–7

OBSERVATION:

Jesus is confronting the Pharisees, who were so obsessed with keeping religious rules that they missed the heart of God. They criticized Jesus and His disciples for picking grain on the Sabbath a technical  violation but Jesus reminds them of what God really values: MERCY. He even says something greater than the temple is here, meaning He is the greater One. The Pharisees honored the structure and systems, but failed to see the Savior standing in front of them.

APPLICATION:

This hits me hard because sometimes I get caught up in doing “Christian” things  showing up to serve, sticking to routines, looking like I have it all together  but my heart might be distant from what matters most: mercy, compassion (not my strongest gift), and love. God doesn’t just want the performance; He wants my heart, especially in how I treat people.
I know that even in today’s world, we have to be careful. I’m not choosing policy over people and religious acts over relationships. Trying to learn the balance can be very tricky but as long as I continue to allow the Holy Spirit to guide me, I want to make sure I see people through the lens of God‘s eyes and not my own.
I need to slow down and choose mercy over judgment. I need to see people the way Jesus does  especially the ones who are hard to love. It means making space for interruptions, forgiving quickly, and checking my motives when I serve. Am I doing it out of love or out of obligation?

PRAYER:

Jesus, You are greater than every tradition and every rule I try to cling to for identity. Help me not just go through the motions. Break my heart for what breaks Yours. Teach me to live with mercy  in my words, in my thoughts, and in how I treat others. Strip away anything in me that’s religious but not relational. I want to walk closely with You and reflect Your mercy every day. Amen
