SCRIPTURE:
'but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.'
Isaiah 40:31
OBSERVATION:
I've heard this verse countless times, and every time I've read it as a promise that God will always be a source of strength for His people. That truth still stands today, but this time the verses surrounding it give me a fresh perspective. Isaiah doesn't simply tell God's people that He will strengthen them, he first reminds them who God is.
He is the God who measures the waters in the palm of His hand.
He marks off the heavens with the breadth of His hand and weighs the mountains and hills as though they were nothing.
He stretches out the heavens like a curtain and names every star, never missing one because of His great power and mighty strength.
When I read this verse in that context, I realize this promise isn't based on my faithfulness, my performance, or anything I've done to deserve it. It is rooted entirely in the greatness of God. My strength doesn't come because I'm strong enough or worthy enough, it comes because the One I place my hope in is greater than every obstacle I face.
The eagle doesn't soar because it flaps harder than every other bird. It soars because it catches the wind beneath its wings. Likewise, I don't endure life's challenges by trying harder. I rise because I learn to trust the greatness of the God who carries me.
APPLICATION:
When I begin to feel exhausted, discouraged, or overwhelmed, my first instinct is often to look inward, to find more discipline, more motivation, or more strength within myself. Isaiah reminds me to look upward instead. He reminds me to fly like an eagle.
Today I want to remember that my hope is not in my ability but in God's greatness. The same God who holds the oceans in His hand holds my life in His hands. The same God who calls every star by name knows me personally and hasn't forgotten me.
The promise of renewed strength is not a reward for perfect performance. It is the gracious gift of a great God to those who put their hope in Him.
PRAYER:
Jesus, thank You for reminding me just how great You are. You hold the universe together, measure the oceans in Your hand, and know every star by name, yet You also know me and care for me. Forgive me for the times I rely on my own strength instead of Yours. Teach me to lift my eyes above my circumstances and fix them on Your greatness. Help me to place my hope in You each day so that I may soar, run, and walk in the strength that only You provide. Amen
