Scripture
“We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” (Hebrews 2:1)
Observation
Sometimes, less is more, as I am feeling about this scripture where there is so much to be said in this one statement. Given further study, I found that Paul encouraged the Hebrews to truly take note of what they were hearing and learning about Jesus Christ. Why? That they would not drift away from the Lord or what He was calling them to. Usually when one issues a warning as Paul does in this case, it is because there is a propensity or habit to do the opposite of what is being asked, given the times at hand. Thus, Paul was succinct in not only encouraging but warning the Hebrews to pay careful attention; not just attention, but careful attention. His concern was that like a boat, which was a main means of transportation and work at the time, the people might drift away if not anchored in what they heard about Christ.
Application
Although inspired and written 2,000 years ago, Paul’s words are so applicable for us today. Given God’s Word to us of who Jesus is, what He did, and what is foretold about His second coming; it is with the same weight of those times that we are reminded to pay careful attention to God’s Word and what the current signs of the times are. We are warned not to let the things of life cause us to drift away, but instead, stay anchored to God’s Word and will. As we stay anchored, we will also be guided by God’s Word as to His plan for us and His call on our lives.
Prayer
Dear Lord, I pray that I not get caught up, distracted, or swayed but the things of life that are impressed upon me each day. Instead Lord, I pray that I will be attentive to all that I heard and read so that I would be anchored in your Word, your will, and your way.
