What Is God’s Purpose For My Life?

SCRIPTURE:

“Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed.”
Acts 13:36

OBSERVATION:

In Pisidian Antioch, Paul enters and sits in the Synagogue on the Sabbath.  He is given an invitation to speak and does so:

“After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.” – Acts 13:15

Paul speaks about important events, John the Baptist and the resurrection of Jesus.  He follows this with verse 36, speaking of David serving God’s purpose in his own generation.

APPLICATION:

This is a verse that I would often ponder for years.  I believe it’s one that many of us think of from time to time without even realizing it.  We ask ourselves – What am I here for?  What is my purpose on this earth?

Perhaps the better question is What is God’s purpose for me?

In years past, I’d think of the many different things that I wanted to do and what I wanted to accomplish.  Drawing up plans and mapping out to-do lists.  The problem was that these were my own selfish plans and it was never very fulfilling.

Taking some advice from Eliphaz the Temanite, one of Job’s friends, we find a great answer.  Here it is:

“But if I were you, I would appeal to God; I would lay my cause before him.” – Job 5:8

When I was able to take some time to truly pray and ask God what His purpose was for me in my own generation, He began to reveal it to me.  He began to make it crystal clear.

Mark Twain once said “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”

Taking the time to pray and seek out the Lord in all that He is calling us to do is an ABSOLUTE MUST.  Even more so as it applies to His purpose for us in our generation.

PRAYER:

Father Almighty.  Forgive me Lord for times when I have tried to make my own plans without asking You.  Thank You Lord that Your plans are so much better.  May I take time daily to sit and seek You out, this I pray, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
