Walking on Water, Leaving a Wake of Wonder

Scripture

“ 'When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. But he said to them, 'It is I; don’t be afraid.' ” (John 6:16-20)

Observation

The disciples anticipated just another evening of fishing.  However, the weather conditions with the strong winds and rough seas arose.  As they continued to row, Jesus appeared walking on water.  Jesus then subsequently quelled their fears.

Application

Challenging times that surface in our lives like storms will arise.  It’s not if, but when, how often, and how great.  It is natural to feel fear and anxiety.  The disciples’ decision to persevere and continue to row, is a reminder to me of not to let situations or appearances of stormy situations cause me to revert to fear and anxiety, but to proceed toward Jesus in prayer, expectation, and faith that His promises and faithfulness are true. I want to be intentional in looking for Jesus walking on the water in the midst of the storm; being reminded that I need not fear, but to keep my eyes focused on Jesus.  Peter was able to walk on water when he kept his eyes focused on Jesus.  When he took his eyes off of Jesus, he sunk.  If we keep our eyes on Jesus, I believe that we will persevere.  And if we take our eyes off of Jesus, we will sink in the mess we’re trying to rise from.

There indeed have been recent unanticipated situations and storms that have arisen, causing my natural impulsive response of concern and consternation.  I am encouraged and will be intentional to continue to row fearlessly, and seek to see Jesus in the midst of the storm, walking on water.

Prayer

Dear Lord, your timing and touch is so wonderful.  I pray that you will continue to speak to me and encourage me through your Word; of your faithfulness, your provision, resolution and miracles.  May the image of you walking on water be a metaphor for me of how you do defy the gravity and graveness in the downpours of life, and the storms of struggle.  I will continue to wallow in the wonder of you!
