The Word is the Word

SCRIPTURE:

“You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.”

Deuteronomy 4:2

OBSERVATION:

God warns Israel clearly, do not add to His word and do not take anything away from it. His command is straightforward and absolute. God’s Word is not something to be altered to fit agendas, cultural pressures, or emotional preferences. It stands on its own authority. Sola Scriptura. This instruction to Israel is a reminder that His Word is complete, intentional, and sufficient. It is meant to be received, respected, and obeyed, not rewritten.

When people manipulate Scripture, they compromise and dilute the purity of God’s Word. Instead of allowing His commands to guide and shape our lives, we tend to reshape the commands themselves to fit what’s comfortable. The Word then becomes a tool used to justify personal motivations rather than the divine truth meant to inspire, correct, and transform.

APPLICATION:

Today I’m challenged to pursue a deeper and more accurate understanding of Scripture. If I am not careful, I could unintentionally interpret God’s Word through my own desires or assumptions rather than through careful study and humility.

To guard against misinterpreting Scripture, I need to be intentional about growing in my understanding. Not more knowledge, but more comprehension, which leads to application and transformation. A couple practical things I can apply immediately:

  1. Spend more time in devotion. Regular and focused time in God’s Word will help me become more familiar with His voice and truth. “Don’t just read the Bible, but let the Bible read me.”
  1. Ask questions. I am surrounded by knowledgeable theologians and mature believers like Pastor Ty Tamasaka and Pastor Richard Waialeale. If I’m not sure, I should ask and take advantage of their wisdom.

Growing in biblical understanding requires humility, discipline, and community. By seeking truth sincerely, I can avoid distorting God’s Word and instead allow it to shape my life as it was intended.

PRAYER:

Jesus, thank You for giving Your Word as truth and guidance for my life. Help me approach Scripture with humility and a sincere desire to understand what You have spoken. Guard my heart from twisting Your Word to fit my own preferences or motivations. Instead, shape my mind and spirit so that I receive Your truth faithfully and live it out with integrity. Amen
