The Airport Arrival

by Fred Alcain on May 28, 2021

Scripture

Proverbs 8:34-Blessed is the man who listens to me,
 Watching daily at my gates,
 Waiting at my doorposts."

Observation

One of my favorite things growing up was waiting at an airport gate for the arrival of a loved one who’s returned from a long trip away. I would watch my grandmother anxiously prepare for the event by having something valued by the returner waiting for them, along with a spam musubi in case they were hungry. We would situate ourselves somewhere clear and unobstructed to make sure that we were easily visible through the crowds. And then we’d wait, frequently checking the arrivals board, carefully scanning all exits just to make sure we don’t miss anything. Then it would happen, the glass doors would slide open, the returner would make eye contact with us, and joy would fill the place.

Application

My prayer is that I value and gain excitement for my time with the Lord the same way. I want to anticipate and desire for my time with God as I do at that airport arrival scene. I think about the events of the day that I can’t wait for: every meal! Coming home and having Gigi and Eden excitedly greet me at the door. Lakers playoff games! I want and need to add TIME WITH GOD to that list. To wait excitedly at His gates, peaking constantly through the holes hoping to see His approach...waiting and His doorposts, clearly visible and ready to receive.

The Proverb says to ‘watch daily at my gates and wait at my doorposts.’ Instead of making the time for Him, I need to recalibrate my heart to long for my time with Him. While I’m confident my day is spent in His presence with Him as my one true purpose, I desire to be like Enoch, walking faithfully with God, so much so that He just takes me away.

Prayer

Jesus, may my excitement to meet with you match my love for You. I love to be in Your presence, I pray You fix my perspective and priorities to long for it too.
