Stranger Danger

SCRIPTURE:

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life, and have it abundantly.”

John 10:10

OBSERVATION:

Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd, intentionally contrasting His heart with that of a thief.

A thief comes quietly and Jesus says with three selfish intents — to steal what is valuable, to bring loss, and to leave destruction behind. Jesus is clear: the enemy’s purpose is always harm, even when it appears subtle or disguised.

By contrast, Jesus says, “I came…” His presence brings hope, doesn’t it?

Another observation: Jesus does not call Himself a shepherd; He calls Himself the good Shepherd. I wondered why he used the adjective ‘good’ in front of the word ‘shepherd’? I think it is because in Jesus’ time, not every shepherd was trustworthy. When danger came, perhaps they fled.

Jesus is saying that a good shepherd stayed, protected the flock, and was willing to lay down his life. Jesus is telling us that he’s and committed to His people. He wants us not only to survive, but He wants us to experience a life full of wholeness, peace, and abundance in Him.

APPLICATION:

I have been thinking:

1) Do I listen to voices that steal my peace, weaken my faith, or leave me discouraged?
Or do I listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd — the One who knows me, leads me, and wants to give me an abundant life?

My role is to stay close to Jesus! He’s where I will find clarity, protection and true life. When I stay close to Jesus, I will spot the enemy quite quickly, because I know my Lord and Savior.

PRAYER:

Jesus, thank You for being our Good Shepherd.
Help us to recognize Your voice and trust Your leading.
Guard our hearts from anything that seeks to steal, kill, or destroy.
Lead us into the abundant life You promised — rooted in Your truth, peace, and presence.
Amen.
