SCRIPTURE:
“Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.“Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”
Luke 14:34-35
OBSERVATION:
When I think of salt, I think of the flavor of steak, richness of hard boiled eggs or the preservation and purifying properties of salt. Both are caused by salt. However, when salt loses its saltiness, what can make it salty again?
This is a metaphor for Christian life. If God transforms with His love, but we turn away from His love what could change us again. It’s a warning. Salt is useful when it works as it was intended to work.
However, when it loses its purpose it’s not good. If we lose our savor we are more worthless than manure. Therefore, everything is secondary to being salty.
APPLICATION:
This is God’s warning. Don’t lose your saltiness. Receiving the love of God is the primary way to saltiness. Therefore, I will be intentional about remaining in the love of God.
Good intentions are not enough. James Clear says, “We don’t rise to the level of our goals, we fall to the level of our systems.” Systems are our habits.
The spiritual disciplines are not secondary, but primary. Life groups, devotions, prayer, and community save time, because they help me avoid 10 year detours caused by not abiding.
I will choose the daily and weekly habits that will make the goal of remaining salty a reality.
PRAYER:
Lord, would You guide me to be faithful to the habits that would guide me to be salty or purified in Christ. Amen.
