Scripture

"Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers. " (Psalms 1:1-3)

Observation

We’re in a time where everyone is looking for answers.  When will gas prices drop?  Who will win this year’s election? Will Westbrook still be on the Lakers in the spring?  We look to news cycles, commentaries from so-called educated and unbiased experts, we even seek opinions from those whom we respect and trust.  But there is only one answer that will forever reign as a timeless truth.  When seeking answers to any question, the answer can be found in the law of the Lord.  God’s word.  Sola Scriptura.

APPLICATION

David starts his book of songs and praises with a 4 point plan to a prosperity rooted in the Lord:

  1. Do not walk in step with the wicked.  For me that means to remain true to the articles of faith as spelled out in 1 Timothy 3; MORAL UPRIGHTNESS, MARITAL FIDELITY AND HARMONY, FAMILY ORDER, ATTITUDINAL COOPERATION, TEACHABILITY, FAITHFULNESS, ACCOUNTABILITY, ADAPTABILITY AND DEVOTION TO CHRIST AND HIS WORD.
  2. Do not stand in the way that sinners take.  This one takes special meaning as we near the elections.  My allegiance needs to be where the word of God stands on issues.  No compromises, no concessions.
  3. Do not sit in the company of mockers.  Here, I’m implored to make my associations pleasing in the sight of God.  For me, it doesn’t mean I do not pursue relationship with the sinner, but my relationship building needs to be always purposed to bring people closer to Christ.
  4. DO meditate on His law day and night.  Here is where the “undying devotion to God and His word” comes into play.  A daily devotion is great.  A 24-7 meditation on it is what takes it to the next level.

When I commit to these 4 steps I become like a tree that bears good fruit and never goes without, ready and prepared for all seasons, and prosperous in all I do.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for Your Word.  No gimmicks needed, just the Word and nothing but the Word.
