Simple Obedience

by John Tilton on September 22, 2025

SCRIPTURE:

“As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he shows us his mercy.”
Psalm 123:2

OBSERVATION:

Why is it often so hard to follow the authority of the Lord when he gives us free will?  As with the slave to his master and the maid to her mistress, they know their role and responsibility, thus, they follow the authority of their masters never even questioning their authority or their response.  Yet, it seems that when given free will to be obedient, we tend to test authority or feel that we have room to be disobedient. It is like I recall in the secular corporate world where everyone knows his or her role and job.  They are there to do a job and do it for a monetary reward.  Yet, with the Lord we are given the reward of salvation up front and still lack obedience.

APPLICATION:

As the scripture states, I know His will, yet I fall short daily with a lapse of responsibility and adherence to His word; later to feel the guilt and remorse of not following His will, heeding to His authority, and love.  What will it take?  I need to be intentional not to fall to temptation, pride, self, and the enemy’s devious ways.  I need to find the mindful will to remember His word in simple obedience.

PRAYER:

Dear Lord, I pray for simple obedience to you, your will, and your Word, that I may know and enact whenever I need to be strong in resisting the enemy’s temptations and falling for his trappings of sin in my life.  May my fleshly desires being overcome by my memory of what Jesus did on the cross, the gift I’ve received up front.  May I truly walk and live in your will for my life.
