Setting My Sights On Above (Heavenward)

by Richard Waialeale on June 17, 2021

Scripture

“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. ” (Colossians 3:1)

Observation

Scripture says to concentrate on the eternal things instead of the temporal things.  The only people who are truly happy on earth are those whose hearts are in heaven.

Set your heart on things above. It’s a central message not only of Paul’s, but throughout all of Scripture. The Bible says, live for heaven and you’ll enjoy life.

Application

For my action step, I suggest three ways to do this:

First, I live for heaven through that which I treasure. Jesus said, “Wherever your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21).

Second, I live for heaven through my trials. I am sure that God sends a trial a day just to keep me homesick for heaven. If He didn’t, I would become bound up in this earth and would miss out eternally on what He has in store for me.

A third way the Lord gets me to set my heart and mind on things above is by transfers—when the people I love precede me into heaven. This process is very important because when I have transferred friends, parents, and spouses into heaven, my heart longs to be there all the more keenly.

Treasures, trials, and transfers are three ways our hearts can be constantly set on things above.

Prayer

Lord, I pray that I focus and concentrate on the things above.  I think about and dwell on the thoughts of heaven.  Lord I will one day be throughout heaven with all those that preceded me and where I have placed the real treasures of my life.  Thank you Lord for Your Word and correcting back to You.  Amen.
