SCRIPTURE:
If you see your fellow Israelite’s ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sure to take it back to its owner. 2 If they do not live near you or if you do not know who owns it, take it home with you and keep it until they come looking for it. Then give it back. 3 Do the same if you find their donkey or cloak or anything else they have lost. Do not ignore it.
Deuteronomy 22:1–3
OBSERVATION:
God commands His people not to ignore their neighbor, those within their community. Instead of pretending not to see the problems, they must actively help restore what belongs to their neighbor. The instruction goes beyond just stating a file to follow, it calls for responsibility, compassion, and integrity.
The phrase said here and then repeated throughout the chapter is “do not ignore it”. God is shaping a community where people care for one another rather than acting selfishly. These rules show that righteousness is not just about avoiding wrongdoing but about actively doing what is right.
APPLICATION:
Today I’m challenged to ignore His prompting and read this entire chapter through the lens of my relationship with Jesus. I realize that these moral instructions reflect His heart. When I’m walking closely with Jesus, helping others and doing the right thing becomes less about following rules and more about living out His character.
My ability to genuinely “follow the rules” flow from how genuine my relationship with Jesus is. If my relationship with Him is strong, my heart becomes aligned with His heart. I begin to “think like He things and acts like He acts.” Genuine love, responsibility, and caring for others become natural responses instead of obligations.
When I am distant from God, it is easier to ignore situations where I could help someone. But when I am walking closely with Jesus, through prayer, being in His word, and obedience, I become more aware of opportunities to serve others. Today I will recalibrate and refocus on strengthening my relationship with Jesus so that doing the right thing happens naturally.
PRAYER:
Jesus, thank You for showing that righteousness is more than rule following, it is a reflection of Your heart. Help me grow closer to You so that my actions reflect Your love and integrity. When I see opportunities to help others, give me the willingness to act instead of ignoring them. Shape my character so that doing what is right flows from my relationship with You. Amen
