SCRIPTURE:
“Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.”
Acts 18:24-26
OBSERVATION:
Paul met Priscilla and Aquila in Corinth. They were tentmakers just as he was and when he left they joined him. Arriving at Ephesus, Paul continues on and they decide to stay, where they meet Apollos. We read that he is a learned and knowledgeable man, instructed in the way of the Lord and speaking with great fervor. After hearing him, Priscilla and Aquila invite him in and begin to mentor and teach him.
APPLICATION:
Reading this story reminds me of my own Priscilla and Aquila. When I began serving in ministry, I was full of energy and excitement, but really didn’t know much. While I was reading my Bible and doing my daily devotions, there was a lot that I still needed to learn.
Pastor Calvin and Pastor Marsha were a married couple serving in the Church. Perhaps I reminded them of one of their sons or they saw that there was much I needed to learn, but I am thankful that they invited me in as one of their own. They became my Priscilla and Aquila, teaching me about the ways of God. It’s been well over 10 years since I met them and they still continue to teach, mentor and encourage me.
Today I’m reminded of how important it is to have mentors like these in our lives. I’m also reminded of something they taught and told me countless times – “What you learn is not for you to hold on to, you need to pour it out into others.” As we have been freely given, we must freely give.
PRAYER:
Father Almighty. Forgive me Lord when I have held on to things You have asked me to give away. Thank You Lord for mentors like Pastor Calvin and Pastor Marsha. Just as they did for me, may I do as well and continue to pour out into others, this I pray, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
