Old Ways & Habits

by John Tilton on March 13, 2023

Scripture

“Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?” (Galatians 4:8-9)

Observation

Paul’s concern was to encourage the people not to go back to their old ways, habits and strongholds.  He took note that prior to knowing Jesus, those in authority influenced them.  However, upon coming to know Jesus, they were under the covering of a higher authority, one whom would and could far exceed the human expectations.  Yet, they were prone to go back to their old ways and habit.

Application

So to, and very applicable to today, where if I am not careful, my old ways and habits creep and sneak into my mind and subsequently into my actions.  The concerning thing is that sometimes, I don’t even realize that I am returning to my old ways.  These scriptures are a great reminder that if I am not aware and cognizant of my old ways and habits, that the enemy or my carnality will lead me astray.  I believe that the key is to draw close to the Lord in studying His word (not just reading His word), and living a prayerful life, daily.

Prayer

Dear Lord, enable me to keep my guard up and my shield about me that I will not allow my old  ways and habits to sneak back into my thoughts, subsequently my actions and therefore potentially lead me astray.  May your word and my time in prayer are and shield me.
