SCRIPTURE:
There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.
Luke 2:36–38
OBSERVATION:
Jesus was recognized in the temple by those who had been faithfully waiting for Him. First there was Simeon, who had been promised that he would see the Messiah before his death. Then there was Anna, a widow and prophetess who had devoted her life to the Lord through worship, fasting, and prayer.
What stands out to me is her devotion. Anna spent years faithfully seeking God, and when Jesus entered the temple, she recognized Him and immediately gave thanks to God. Her years of worship and prayer were not wasted years. God had given purpose even to a season that could have felt lonely or insignificant.
Life Application says, “Anna discovered that God can make every season of life meaningful and useful. The long years of widowhood were also effective years of worship and service.”
Anna and Simeon remind me that a life faithfully devoted to God can develop a deeper sensitivity to what He is doing.
APPLICATION:
Anna’s devotion caught my attention. I may have read past her before, thinking she wasn’t an important part of the story, yet Scripture intentionally points her out.
Sometimes I wonder, “God, how long do I have to stay in this season? What am I doing with my life?” Yet Anna remained in the temple worshiping, fasting, praying, and serving God. She could have looked at her circumstances and thought her best years were behind her. Instead, she anchored her life in devotion to God.
I don’t want to become so focused on getting out of a difficult season or getting what I want next that I miss what God wants to do in me right now. Comparison can make me look at someone else’s season and wonder why I’m not there yet. But God keeps reminding me, Be faithful where I have you.
I want to live every stage of my life devoted to the Lord, trusting that no season surrendered to Him is ever wasted.
PRAYER:
Lord, thank You for reminding me through Anna that no season devoted to You is ever wasted. Help me not to rush what You are doing or compare my season to someone else’s.
Teach me to remain faithful where You have placed me to worship, pray, serve, and love You deeply in every stage of life. Help me trust Your timing and recognize Your presence even in the waiting. Let my life be anchored in You and found faithful in every season.In Jesus’ name, amen.
