Learning the Old, Receiving the New

SCRIPTURE:

He said to them, “Therefore, every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”

Matthew 13:52

OBSERVATION:

Jesus told a parable of the kingdom of God that it is here now and also the judgement they were to perceive will be in the future. Yet the religious leaders were not too far to discount Jesus and to ridicule him. Yet Jesus knew anyone who understands God’s real purpose in the law as revealed in the Old Testament has a real treasure. See, those who understand Jesus’ teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven receive a double benefit. Both the old and new teachings give practical guidelines for faith and for living in the world. The teachers of religious law, however, were trapped in the old and blind to the new.

APPLICATION:

What a fortified way to put it:  every teacher must become a disciple of the kingdom of God, for to them the treasures of the old and new will be revealed. The Pharisees or religious leaders missed out on a lot of opportunities as Jesus was explaining about the kingdom of God, but we’re so stuck in their ways.

I think about how I can be stuck in my ways as well and receiving new things or new ideas. I don’t ever want to get caught in the trap of “ you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” But I want to constantly become a learner and a student of all things. I think that’s what I  missed out on was staying a student of what Jesus was trying to teach; therefore, everyone around them was able to receive the gems of the Kingdom of God.

I want to make sure that I stay as a disciple of the kingdom of God. Never get too proud but just humbly learning. I don’t want to miss out on what God is trying to teach me.

PRAYER:

Lord, thank you for teaching me and correcting me when I need to. God, I pray that I don’t get stuck in my ways but to constantly learn. Teach me and reveal things of heaven to me, amen.
