SCRIPTURE:
“The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.”
John 1:35-37
OBSERVATION:
John knew from the beginning that he was to point everyone towards Jesus. While others were following John, he made it clear that Jesus was the coming savior, not himself. When others questioned him, he tells them so.
“Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’” – John 1:22-23
APPLICATION:
While there are leaders on this earth that are great examples, we must remember that they are all human and their job, just as John’s, is to lead us to Jesus.
The danger comes when we start thinking otherwise. When leaders start to think it’s all about themselves, they must quickly repent and return to the truth – There is only one savior and it isn’t us. Or suffer the consequences.
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” – Proverbs 16:18
Early on in my leadership, a brother came up to me and said “I want to be just like you.” If I’m being honest, it felt good, but the Lord quickly reminded me – It’s not about you.
I replied “Actually you don’t. I have a lot that I still need to work on and I’m human, so there are times when I’ll let you down. Jesus won’t. It’s Him that you really want to be more and more like.”
Pride is sneaky like that. A nice comment here and there, and we can start to believe it for ourselves. A daily dying to myself and my pride is a necessity for me.
PRAYER:
Father Almighty. Forgive me Lord for times when I have taken far more credit than I should have. Thank You Lord for the lessons You teach me daily. May I remember that it’s all about You and not about me, this I pray, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
