It Seemed Good to the Holy Spirit and to Us

SCRIPTURE:

“It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements…”

Acts 15:28

OBSERVATION:

This moment takes place during a critical decision in the early Church. A serious conflict had arisen over whether Gentile believers needed to follow Jewish laws—especially circumcision—in order to be saved. The apostles and elders gathered in Jerusalem to seek clarity, unity, and truth.

What’s striking is how the decision was made. This wasn’t rushed, emotional, or politically motivated. There was discussion, testimony, Scripture, and prayer. Most importantly, the leaders recognized that this was not their church—it was God’s. They intentionally included the Holy Spirit in the process and acknowledged His authority in their final conclusion.

Their decision protected the freedom of new believers and kept the gospel centered on grace, not rules. Instead of placing heavy religious burdens on people, they chose unity, wisdom, and sensitivity—guided by the Holy Spirit.

APPLICATION:

It is necessary to include the Holy Spirit in every decision. Not as an afterthought, but as the guide. He guides us, we follow.

Too often, decisions are made based on logic, pressure, fear, or convenience. But godly decisions are formed when I pause, pray, and ask, “Holy Spirit, what do You want?” When He is included, decisions bring peace, clarity, and alignment with God’s heart—not unnecessary burdens for myself or others.

If the early Church needed the Holy Spirit to navigate complex issues, I certainly do too. My husband and I were talking to a young married couple going through a bumpy time. We asked them if they were including the Holy Spirit in their discussions, and they admitted they were not. We talked to them about including the Holy Spirit and allowing Him to lead and guide them, and we encouraged them that by doing so, God honors this and things would get better once they give up their control and begin yielding to the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER:

Holy Spirit, I invite You into every decision I make.
Teach me to slow down, listen, and trust Your leading.
Guard my heart from adding burdens where You offer freedom.
Help me choose what honors You and builds others up.
Amen.
