SCRIPTURE:
"Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
John 8:11
OBSERVATION:
The ingredients for change are “neither do I condemn you” and “Go now and leave your life of sin.” The woman was caught in the act of adultery. Everyone knew her sin. However, Jesus didn't condemn her. He defended her. Some believe that Jesus Christ was writing the sins of the Pharisees on the ground. From oldest to youngest, all her accusers left, and the only one who had a right to punish her did not. God shows this woman grace when she deserved it the least, but needed it the most. This is the moment that life change began.
“Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” (Luke 7:47). These are the ingredients to transformation: vulnerability, grace, and truth. Christ retroactively forgives the sin of this woman. God made a way by showing grace and justice on the cross by taking the punishment that we deserve. He says even today, “Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more.”
APPLICATION:
The ingredients of a changed heart are transparency, grace, and truth. This is powerful. God gave me what I don’t deserve, but need the most. He gave me grace. While I was still a sinner, Christ died for me. This is the power of grace the world needs. God knows my sins; however, just like a father desires his children to confess their wrong, instead of being caught, God desires that we confess to Him.
Confession is the key to gratitude. When we confess to one another, we allow ourselves to experience the grace of God through the body of Christ. That’s why James 5:16 says, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” I will consistently confess my sin to the Lord, but also to a brother. I want to build the power of gratitude through transparency, grace, and truth. I will remind myself of the word of our Lord, “Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more.”
PRAYER:
Lord, would You guide me to view my life through the lens of the cross? The world behind me, the cross before. Would the grace of God grow in gravity in my life. I know it’s not just the fear of punishment, but the joy that the King became a servant and died for me. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
