If The Ax is Dull, Sharpen It

by John Tilton on June 09, 2025

SCRIPTURE:

“If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success.”
Ecclesiastes 10:10

OBSERVATION:

It’s so true that a dull ax or machete requires more effort and strength.  I remember clearing out overgrown bushes and growth on the side of my home that had grown over and into the chain link fence that separates our property from the neighbor.  I was using a sawzaw powertool as well as a weedwacker.  When the sawzaw blade is either dull, the wrong size teeth or has become loose, the cutting takes more time and applied pressure is needed.  Furthermore, a loose blade not only causes the cutting to be challenging but can pose danger to the operator by snapping.  I’ve also noticed that the right weedwacker nylon cutting cord in terms of size is so essential to the type of brush or grass that I am cutting, as the wrong size for thicker bushes or grass takes so much longer to cut.  A more powerful weedwacker with thicker “edged” cord seems to cut through brush like a hot knife through butter.

APPLICATION:

I would like to be like that sharp blade and thicker edged cord in all that I do, especially being led by the Holy Spirit and a depth of His Word.  I know and am reminded that I need to seek and do the sharpening through God’s Word, as well as selecting the resources and opportunities which is like picking the right blade or thick edged cord so that I will be able to do what I am called to do more expediently and not struggling and/or wasted effort or time.

May my time in the Word sharpen my mind and may the Holy Spirit lead me with His bestowed skill.

PRAYER:

Dear Lord, I pray that I would put in the “wood shed” time to sharpen my mind and heart through your Word, and that the Holy Spirit would guide and help me with the utmost skill in the things I do to honor you and bring glory to your name.
