I Dare Not Take the Throne

by John Tilton on October 19, 2026

SCRIPTURE:

“On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. They shouted, ‘This is the voice of a god, not of a man.’ Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.

Acts 12:21-23

OBSERVATION:

Pretty astonishing that Herod would think of himself as a god. I can only surmise that his earthly authority and riches must have skewed his mind to think and believe that he would ascend to be a god. And to know that in believing he was a god that he didn’t acknowledge and give glory to God almighty therefore resulting in his being struck down by God. He reaped what he sowed. Pride cometh before the fall.

APPLICATION:

Do we sometimes perhaps although not thinking of ourselves as god-like, puff ourselves up to think and believe that we are more than we are, that our accomplishments and successes are self-made, and fail to give God all the glory as believers knowing of the Lord almighty’s omnipotence of all power and authority. We may think that our blessings and achievements are of our making. Not only do we fail to give glory to God, but we “ghost” God by being more consumed with the things of the world rather than reverence for Him and our relationship with the one and only God. I will dare not attempt to ascend to a position of a thrown-like mentality. May I stay humble and contrite in the Lord.

PRAYER:

Dear Lord, I am so sorry for the times that I have thought of my accomplishment and successes being of my making rather than your blessings and providence. May I always seek you in all things and give your all the glory when good things come to fruition.
