SCRIPTURE:
2 And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, "It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.
3 Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty.
4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."
Acts 6:2-4
OBSERVATION:
Here the 12 set a standard of leadership and team building that should still apply today. At first glance it can seem that they’re saying, “we don’t have time for little tasks. We’re too good and holy for that.” But that’s not the case at all. What they were doing was identifying their 5% and strategizing how to steward that while shepherding all their responsibilities. The way to do that was to build a team.
APPLICATION:
So how do you build a team?
- Find men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom. You can’t compromise this one. Skill will only take you so far. Character and integrity need to be present as well. In fact, those 2 qualities are better starting points than talent and skill.
- Find people who fit the role not people who are interested in the role or available for the role. We miss this one a lot. Availability often take the place of fit and interest takes the place of qualification. Yes, we want to involve people, but we don’t want to mis-slot them. That does both them and us a disservice.
- Know that just because someone is gifted it doesn’t mean their gifted in all areas. Gifts matter and spiritual gifts matter even more.
- Find your 10’s. We say at New Hope that “everyone is a 10 somewhere.” When you know where your teammates are 10’s you are not only able to have them operate in their areas of gifting and skill, you’re also able to offer grace and shepherd the 5 and below areas. That’s probably the greater key to team success then letting the shooters shoot and the passers pass.
PRAYER:
Jesus, thank You for the reminder that we are not meant to do things alone. Thank you for the countless examples in Your word which shows us the way. I pray for the obedience to follow and the discipline to never give up. Amen
