Heir Apparent

Scripture

“In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:11-12)

Observation

Such a beautiful reminder for us that we are pre-chosen heirs to inherit all that the Lord has planned to be ours.  I think of an eternity with Christ Jesus.  However, in order to receive this inheritance, we are called to live according to the counsel of Jesus’ will, or being obedient to God’s will.  But wait, isn’t an inheritance meant to be free? Not always, for instance when there are stipulations included in an inheritance (usually by way of a will or trust document). Thus, it is in obedience to follow his counsel of his will, that we would be heirs of his inheritance, and therefore subsequently bring praise onto him.  Wow, it’s pretty cool to think that we would inherit everything according to the riches of his glory, if we heed wise counsel (which is his word); and that by doing so, it would be for his “praise and glory,” and not ours.

Application

Years ago, I was blessed to inherit my parents’ home.  I was and am so grateful, realizing that there are so many people that can’t afford a home, have to rent, and even those that are homeless.  I recall that although I have siblings, it was understood that my blessing of an inheritance was an understanding and arrangements that I move back home with my parents to care for them.  Although the focus for me wasn’t the promise of the home although it’s a once-in-a-lifetime blessing, but rather putting the care of my parents first; because it was the loving and right thing to do.  So to. is it with our willingness as we act upon “the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will.”  As we follow and put Christ first, our inheritance awaits ... we become heirs apparent.  And as I always look back with gratefulness on my inheritance of a home, more so, I am grateful for the eternal home the I will inherit with Christ.

Prayer

Dear Lord, it is with gratefulness and love that I look forward to my inheritance of my eternal home with you.  For now, I will act according to your purposes by following in obedience you counsel, and reviling in the praise and glory that it brings you.
