Heart Work, Not Hard Work

SCRIPTURE:

“At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.  Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.  And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
Mark 1:9-11

OBSERVATION:

At this point in scripture, Jesus hadn’t done any miracles or any public ministry that we read of.  He hasn’t done anything, yet we know this much – God calls Him His son, God proclaims that He loves Him and that God is pleased with Him.

APPLICATION:

There was a point in my life where I was serving a lot.  I had lost track of what I was doing it for and to some degree had become performance oriented.  The doing had become more important than the being.

One day as I drove home, I started to pray and speak to The Lord.  As I prayed, I remember asking God this, “What can I do for You Lord?  What do you want me to do?”  I was so task driven that my pride had gotten the better of me.  If I’m being honest, the real question I was asking was “Lord, what bigger things do you want me to do for You?”

Clear as day, I heard Him say this, “All I want is your heart.”

I’ve never forgotten that.  It’s been a constant reminder to me that no matter how busy I get with the doing, that I don’t have to do anything at all to be called His son, to be loved by Him and to know that I am pleasing to Him.  All I need to do is give God my heart.

PRAYER:

Father Almighty.  Forgive me Lord for times when I have prioritized doing over being.  Thank You Lord for loving me.  May I give You my heart, this I pray, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
