God's Purpose

Scripture

" Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad—in order that God’s purpose in election might stand: not by works but by him who calls—she was told, 'The older will serve the younger.' Just as it is written: 'Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.'

What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all!" (Romans 9:11-14)

Observation

Even as I now read in the N.T., I have a problem right here. “How could God choose to love Jacob, and choose to hate Esau before they were even born?”  The answer is simple. It is because God is sovereign. The mystery to me is not that God hated Esau.  I see now that the mystery to me is that God loved Jacob—and that He loves me, a rotten, self-absorbed kid just like Jacob. Did God choose correctly?

As I read my Bible and I see that Esau wasn’t interested in spiritual things, but attracted to carnal things. Yes, God chose correctly—He always does.

Application

God must have known that one day it would happen, that this self-absorbed adult, practically trashing his life in alcohol and drugs would make a 180 degree turn around to be found by Jesus.  God must have known that it would take 39 years, after half my life was wasted, that I would make a decision for Christ Jesus, and only Jesus would heal and transform me into a new person and that I would accept His destiny and purpose for my life.  I am so grateful for making the change.  God knew and I could have never seen this.  That is why I must trust in Him.

Prayer

Father, I thank you for changing my life and seeing in me what no one else, including me, could have never seen.  That only goes to show that God has a purpose in everything.  I must trust in Him and follow His purposes all the days of my life.  There is a future and a hope in Jesus.  Amen.
