Fruitful or Fallow?

by John Tilton on November 02, 2026

SCRIPTURE:

“The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

Psalm 121:1–2

OBSERVATION:

Fig trees were known to have early fruit before a harvest if the leaves on the tree were plentiful.  Thus, as Jesus approached the tree, it would seem highly likely that the abundance of leaves suggested that there was early fruit on the tree.  But there was none.  Thus, Jesus cursed the tree.

APPLICATION:

This is a great illustration of appearing to be deep in faith by the things we say, yet what people see is only an appearance and not authentic faith.  It can also be playing church in attendance yet not walking in the Lord’s will and ways in obedience.  The most cautionary is looking the part in faith and service yet seeking self-gain.  Thus, are we indeed close to the creator and being fruitful? Or are we fallow and barren with nothing to harvest and fruitless?

PRAYER:

Dear Lord, may my time with you in your Word always guide me to have authentic faith in following in obedience your Word, your ways, your purpose and plan.  May I never seek self-gain, self-gratification, and be puffed up with pride.  May I walk in your truth and faith.
