From Complaining to Trust

SCRIPTURE:

Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord, and when he heard them his anger was aroused.

Numbers 11:1

OBSERVATION:

This moment comes as the Israelites are on their journey through the wilderness. God had delivered them from slavery, guided them with His presence, and provided daily for their needs. Yet instead of gratitude, their response to hardship was complaint—and not quietly, but openly “in the hearing of the Lord.”

Their complaining revealed more than frustration; it exposed a lack of trust in God’s care and provision. What they voiced with their mouths reflected what was forming in their hearts.

APPLICATION:

God doesn’t like us to complain. Period.

Complaining shifts my focus from who God is to what I lack. It blinds me to His faithfulness and feeds discontent. While God invites me to bring my burdens to Him, He calls me to do it with trust—not grumbling.

This challenges me to pause and examine my words. Am I praying… or complaining? Am I trusting God in hardship, or questioning His goodness? Choosing gratitude re-centers my heart and realigns my perspective with His truth.

My mom used to hum a lot. I asked her why, and she said it was because when she was in pain, she didn’t want to grumble. So she’d hum. Let’s be like my mom and try to hum.

PRAYER:

Lord, forgive me for the times I complain instead of trusting You.
Help me bring my struggles to You with faith, not frustration.
Teach me to replace grumbling with gratitude and to remember Your faithfulness, even in hard seasons.
Amen.
