SCRIPTURE:
Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
John 6:27
OBSERVATION:
Today, December 19, Kamehameha Schools ʻohana around the globe honor and celebrate the life of Ke Aliʻi Bernice Pauhi Bishop. This yearʻs Founderʻs Day takes special meaning as Pauahiʻs legacy has come under unmerited attack. DISCLAIMER: the following is not a comparison of Pauahi to Jesus, but an observation on how Jesusʻ incomparable example of love can inspire to incomparable vision and mission.
As Jesusʻ utters these words after two memorable miracles He places full focus on the eternal. While the present has itʻs demands and desires, only the eternal has the Fatherʻs absolute approval. Now, when I look at the life of Pauahi Lani Nui I see the same eternal perspective which prompted and purposed her efforts. Inspired by her Creator and Savior and informed by His Word, Pauahi put boots to the ground by established a will that would bless her people in perpetuity. Instead of “working for food that spoils”, instead of quick fixes to an ailing people and fragile kingdom, Pauahi instead saw the long game. She saw to the potential of her people and acted appropriately to ensure a long lasting legacy. Only Jesus could inspire that. Only an obedient servant could accomplish that.
APPLICATION:
So today, how will I live differently? Listen to Jesus. Pure and simple. All the answers to everything can be found if I just remember to look in the right place. Pauahi did this and her legacy of loving God by loving her people continues hundreds of years after her passing. Often times I want the quick fix, the temporary reprieve that requires little in sacrifice. Today Iʻm reminded that you get what you pay for. Temporary is exactly that, while eternal will last way beyond anything I can hope for or imagine. Today I choose food that endures rather then the fast food options that fix a craving but fail to fulfill a hunger. Today I remain forever indebted for Pauahi’s eternal perspective and forever grateful for Jesus’ eternal love.
PRAYER:
Jesus, I pledge to develop my potential in all I do. To strive to meet my responsibilities and to progress to the best of my ability, all while carrying myself with a dignity found in the Father’s approval and a pride found in You alone. Amen
