Fake News

by John Tilton on March 06, 2023

Scripture

Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.” (Mark 13:5-8)

Observation

Jesus clearly was warning the disciples to be careful in drawing conclusions in what they see and hear, less they be deceived.  He warned them that they will hear of wars, but not to panic, since such events are inevitable and reality.  Furthermore, earthquakes and famines will be forthcoming.  However, he tells them that this is all God’s plan, and the beginning of what is to come.

Application

Do not be deceived.  Given the things that are going on in our communities and the world; it is so clear that the all we are experiencing are signs of the times as noted in the Bible. We see and hear of the wars, earthquakes, pestilence, crime, erosion of morals. Let us not be deceived that it is something else or do not be concerned.  Be aware, not scared.

If we are not careful, fake news or untruths can cause us not only to be fearful, but to react and respond in worldly ways.  The more that we know God’s word, who He is, and who we are in Christ; we will be able to discern fake news and untruths of the world.

Prayer

Dear Lord, please lead and guide me each day to stay close to you, and in your Word, that I may not be startled and led astray at what goes on in life and the world.  May I draw close to you to know the good news from fake news, and therefore live accordingly in your ways.
