Don’t Come Down

by Mary Waialeale on October 11, 2026

SCRIPTURE:

“So I sent messengers to them with this reply: ‘I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?’”

Nehemiah 6:3

OBSERVATION:

As Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, opposition constantly surrounded him. His enemies tried distraction, intimidation, false accusations, and fear to pull him away from the work God had called him to do.

But Nehemiah refused to come down.

He stayed focused on the assignment God had given him.

Then in Luke 24, after Jesus’ resurrection, the disciples were discouraged and confused until Jesus opened their eyes and reminded them of God’s greater plan. What looked like defeat had actually become victory.

Psalm 146 also reminds us not to place ultimate trust in people or circumstances, but in the Lord who remains faithful forever.

APPLICATION:

Distraction is one of the enemy’s greatest tools.

Sometimes the enemy cannot stop the work God is doing in our lives, so instead he tries to pull our focus away from it through discouragement, offense, fear, exhaustion, or unnecessary conflict.

Nehemiah challenges me to stay focused.

There are moments when I need to say spiritually:
“I cannot come down.”

I cannot come down into bitterness.
I cannot come down into distraction.
I cannot come down into fear or discouragement.

God has given each of us assignments, callings, and people to love and serve faithfully. Staying focused requires spiritual discernment and endurance.

PRAYER:

Lord, help me stay focused on the work and calling You have placed before me. Protect me from distractions, discouragement, fear, and unnecessary battles that pull my heart away from You. Give me discernment to recognize what matters most and strength to remain faithful. Help me keep my eyes fixed on You and not lose heart when opposition comes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
