Doing The Will Of God

by Rien Vidad on August 27, 2024

SCRIPTURE:

“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.”
Psalm 143:10

OBSERVATION:

David asks the Lord to teach him to do His will, that the Spirit of the Lord would lead him.

APPLICATION:

Right before Jesus was arrested as he prayed at the Mount of Olives, he prayed this:

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” – Luke 22:42

We so often want to do our own will, that if we’re being honest about it, we’d like to pray this prayer instead – Lord, not your will, but mine be done.  Yet, here is David asking God to teach him to do His will.

What’s so interesting is that David is asking God to teach him to DO His will.  There’s a big difference between KNOWING and DOING God’s will.   After Jesus washes the feet of the disciples, he speaks to them on the difference between knowing and doing:

“Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” – John 13:17

Blessed if you do, not if you know.

For years, I knew what the Lord was calling me to do and His will in my life, but it wasn’t until I started actually doing it did I see the blessings from that obedience.  For so long, what was standing in the way was my own pride and stubbornness.

Teach me Lord, not just to know Your will, but to do Your will.

PRAYER:

Father Almighty.  Forgive me Lord for all of the times that I have gotten in the way and not done what You have asked of me.  Thank You Lord for your patience, grace and forgiveness.  May I not just know Your will, but may I do it as well, this I pray, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
