Before You Decide, Pray

by Pua Palakiko on March 21, 2026

SCRIPTURE:

“The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord.”

Joshua 9:14

OBSERVATION:

The Israelites made a treaty with the Gibeonites without asking God for guidance. The Gibeonites tricked them by pretending to be from a far-off land, and because the Israelites relied on their own judgment instead of seeking the Lord, they were deceived. This mistake had long-term consequences, as they were now bound by an oath to protect a people they were originally meant to conquer. This shows the importance of seeking God’s wisdom before making decisions, especially when things seem obvious or harmless on the surface.

APPLICATION:

I can relate to this because there have been times when I made choices based on what I thought was best without praying first. Sometimes, things seem right in the moment, but later I realize I should have asked for God’s direction. Whether it’s making decisions about friendships, opportunities, or even daily choices, I need to remember to seek God’s wisdom instead of just going with what feels right. This verse reminds me to slow down and pray before acting, trusting that God sees what I cannot.

PRAYER:

Lord, help me to seek You first in every decision I make. I don’t want to rely only on my own understanding but instead trust in Your wisdom. Give me discernment to recognize what is right and to avoid deception. Help me to develop the habit of praying before making choices so that I can walk in Your will. Amen.
