SCRIPTURE:
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,”
Psalm 1:1
OBSERVATION:
Blessed is the one who stays away from the wicked, sinners and mockers. There’s so much that we can learn from this one verse.
#1) Be careful of the people you choose to walk with. (“…in step with the wicked…”)
“Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” – Proverbs 13:20
#2) Be careful of the path and direction that you decide to go in. (“…stand in the way that sinners take…”)
“Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way.” – Proverbs 4:14-15
#3) Be careful of the company you keep. (“…sit in the company of mockers…”)
“Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” – 1 Corinthians 15:33
APPLICATION:
If we aren’t careful, the company we keep can lead us in the wrong direction. Chaos and devastation await those who walk with the wicked, take the path of sin and sit in the seat of mockers.
Blessings, on the other hand, can be found on the opposite side of that. When we spend time with The Lord and The Word, we become fruitful.
“but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither – whatever they do prospers.” – Psalm 1:2-3
There’s good news. There’s still hope for those who keep in step with the wicked and may be standing in the way that sinners take. They can still turn and walk in the other direction (repent). It’s when we stop and sit in that sin where it becomes dangerous.
I need to ensure that I am surrounding myself with people who Love God and Love me, in that order. People whose delight is in spending time with The Lord and The Word.
PRAYER:
Father Almighty. Forgive me Lord for times when I have stopped and sat in sin. Thank You Lord for the community of believers You have placed me in. May I be careful of those that I walk with and the company that I keep, this I pray, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
