Scripture
"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world." (1 John 4:1-3)
Observation
In these scriptures, John encourages us to test the words and teachings of those who claim to be speaking on behalf of God. We often hear people say “God told me,” or “I have a word from the Lord.” As believers, people do indeed hear from the Lord. However, in these current times with “fake news,” conspiracy theories, and when people come to us with a “word from the Lord,” we need to “test the spirits,” as the Word says. The “spirit” of the person represents his/her inner spiritual character, and often one’s motivation. John reminds us to be careful that those who are making claims, teaching, and speaking into our lives; are led of the Holy Spirit to edify, encourage, and correct; but not to breakdown, distract, or fill us with disinformation and claims.
Application
I've experienced those times where as a leader and pastor, people will share what they believe God gave them as words for me, and the church. I’ve been blessed by words that encourage, edify, and even correct. However, when words tend to distract, discourage, or seemingly tear down; it is time to “test the spirits,” and call on the Lord to “put behind” and clear our minds of such things. It is so true what the Word of God says, that it’s not what we put in our mouth that defiles us, but what sometimes comes out in words that do. Be careful of what you hear and believe.
Prayer
Dear Lord, in these current times, I pray that you would give my ears filters to screen the words from others that I let in and take to heart. I pray that you will protect my heart, but also allow me to see the things that you want me to receive, see, and understand; even when it is correction or direction. I know that the enemy will often use the words of others to distract, destroy, and tear down what you are trying to build. May it not be. Thank you, Lord, for your covering, protection, and discernment.
