Be Careful How You Live

SCRIPTURE:

“Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.”

Titus 2:6-8

OBSERVATION:

Titus is called to encourage the young men to watch themselves. He is called to not just encourage them to practice self-control, but to be an example to them in actions and in speech.

APPLICATION:

There is a watching world out there not just listening to what you say, but watching what you do. As a believer, we will be looked at as a reflection of Christ. One of my favorite quotes on this subject goes like this:

“Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible someone ever reads.” – William Toms

One day as I sat in my local coffee shop working on a few things, I noticed the delivery driver having a hard time with the door. Having difficulty trying to keep the door open and roll in his delivery, I walked over and held it open for him saying “I got it.” He turned to look at me, smiled and said “Thanks Pastor, I go to New Hope.”

It was in that moment that I was reminded of others watching how we behave. As I sat down, my phone buzzed and as I looked down to read the text message it was yet another startling reminder. My wife sent me a message that she got from the driver’s wife that just happened to be someone she knew, asking her to thank me for holding the door.

The world we live in allows for information to be passed at lightning speed. While I was thankful that this was a test I passed, it was a reminder that my actions, words and behavior as a follower of Christ are always being watched. That we must be careful how we live.

“Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” – Ephesians 5:15-16

PRAYER:

Father Almighty. Forgive me Lord for times when I have failed the test. Thank You Lord that You call us to live wisely at all times. May I do my best to live as You call me to, this I pray, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
