Are You In Need

by Justin Smith on July 28, 2021

Scripture

Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.” (Isaiah 55:1-3)

Observation

Isaiah proclaims an invitation; an invitation sent out to those who thirst for more, to those in need, to those who lack…to come. Come to something so much greater than merely bread, wine, and water, which does not satisfy, and where the cost is not measured in dollars and cents. This is the invitation to salvation and the abundant life in God where the entrance is free to those that trust and believe, and the satisfaction found is eternal. I love the imagery that Isaiah uses: why spend money on bread that will never fill your stomach or toil and labor when satisfaction can’t be bought.

Satisfaction, fulfillment, provision, and fruitfulness await those who heed this invitation to:

  1. Come to God: He knows your need and is the only Source and Provider.
  2. Listen: To listen you must be close, you must be intentional, and you must be humbly submitted.
  3. Eat what is good: Each day we are given a choice: will you choose to partake in what is righteous and good and will bring eternal satisfaction, or will you choose to partake in what is fleshly and sinful and may bring temporary pleasure?

Application

This invitation to come and find eternal life is sent out to every person who does not know Jesus…AND it’s being sent out to those that do. Each day Jesus invites us to come to Him, and if I were being honest, there are days where I choose not to. There are days where I want to wallow in my bad attitude and choose not to listen. There are days where my flesh wins and I choose to partake in/eat what is not good. There are even days where I run from God.  Beyond that, there are Christians and non-Christians alike that are thirsty for more, are lacking and in need, and are searching for satisfaction, and this invitation to come to Him is available at all times.  God is saying: stop worrying and find comfort in me, stop fearing and find peace in me, stop running and find forgiveness in me, and stop hiding and find love in me.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for this invitation to find You. Forgive me when I try to find comfort, answers or happiness in the things of this world. I know You are the only source of satisfaction and joy, so please forgive me for trying to replace You with earthly things. Please also forgive me for the times where I let my flesh win. I choose today to come to you, to listen, and to choose what is good, and I will trust You with the rest. In Your name, Amen!
