SCRIPTURE:
"Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned." Hebrews 6:7-8
OBSERVATION:
There are two types of land referred to here – fruitful and unfruitful. Both receive the same amount of rain, but one produces a useful crop while the other produces thorns and thistles. One receives the blessing of God, while the other is in danger of being cursed.
APPLICATION:
God constantly rains down his love, forgiveness and blessings upon us, but He gives us the power to choose what we’ll do with it. Do we withhold love and forgiveness from others or do we freely give it away?
Will we hold on to what God has blessed us with and become a cul-de-sac, or will we let go and become a conduit of these blessings?
When I was younger, my Mom made this easy for me to understand. She said, “My Dad, your grandpa, used to always say this – when your hand is closed there’s not much you can put in it. When you’re holding on so tightly to the things that you’ve been given, it’s hard for you to receive anything in return. When your hand is open and giving things away to those around you, then God can bless you and give you even more.”
During this season, I must remember the lessons my Grandpa taught my Mom – that it’s more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). Whether it’s love or forgiveness I need to extend to someone, or sharing the blessings I have with others around me, I must become a conduit and not a cul-de-sac of these blessings.
PRAYER:
Father Almighty. Forgive me Lord for holding on so tightly to the things You have given me. In this season and upcoming New Year, may I be a conduit of your goodness to those around me, this I pray, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
