SCRIPTURE:
“Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.”
Acts 17:11-12
OBSERVATION:
The definition of the word “noble” is of high moral character and principles. Due to the high moral and character and principles of the Berean Jews, they were more receptive and open to consideration of what was being presented by Paul. Subsequently, due to their openness and receptivity, they were blessed to gain an understanding and thus believe. In addition, they influenced others to be open and receptive, perhaps due to their witness of Jews of noble character. I love the saying, “let your character precede you.” I believe that the Berean Jews’ character preceded them.
APPLICATION:
I believe that not only does God call us to know Him as our Savior and Lord; but that through His word He teaches He teaches us valuable lessons of character and principles. The Beatitudes come to mind; that we would think less of ourselves and more of the humility of the Lord. Often, it may be a perspective of the “glass being half full rather then half empty,” or looking for the good rather than the bad, as well as the “silver lining.” Most of all, like the Bereans, open and receptive to what Christ is saying. When I am standing with noble character and principles, God can better use me to influence others as a witness and testimony of the Lord’s will and ways. The attributes of grace, humility, and love come to mind. May these attributes precede me.
PRAYER:
Dear Lord, thank you for giving me an understanding and another jewel to help and guide me in who you call me to be, and what can empower me to not only grow in your will, but be a witness and testimony of who you are in me. Please continue to guide and lead me daily in your will and ways.
