This season we are studying the Gospel of Luke.
Welcome to this study of Luke’s Gospel! Luke was a Gentile Christian and the only Gentile writer of the New Testament. He was a follower of the Apostle Paul, frequently accompanying him and caring for him on his missionary journeys. His Greek writing style shows that Luke was a highly educated man. He wrote this Gospel, and the book of Acts for a man he calls “most excellent Theophilus”, possibly a high official. His purpose, stated in Luke 1:3 and Acts 1:1 was to present an orderly account of all Jesus began both to do and to teach.
Paul refers to Luke as “the beloved physician” so it’s not surprising that Luke’s Gospel gives a high profile to Jesus’ acts of healing.
A key verse in Luke’s Gospel is Luke 19:10 which says that Jesus “has come to seek and to save that which was lost”. He presents Jesus as the Savior of all sorts of people, and includes stories such as the account of the Pharisee and the sinful woman, Zacchaeus, and the pardon of the thief on the cross, which are not found in the other Gospels, but which demonstrate that no one is beyond the reach the gospel of salvation. He emphasizes the fact that the Gospel is not just for Jews but is for all people everywhere.
