Can't He Just Take It?

by Justin Smith on May 11, 2022

Scripture

"Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you...But as for me, I trust in you." (Psalm 55:22-23)

Observation

I’m sure I’m not the only one that wishes life could be worry-free! Could you imagine not having to worry about relationship issues, financial woes, mean people, drama, and the daily stresses this world throws at you. Talk about a taste of heaven right here on Earth. I mean...can’t God just deal with all of these things BEFORE we have to face them!? In Psalm 55 we find David in the midst of this type of struggle. Some people are out to get him, and he’s discouraged and overcome by their hate. In fact, this mighty warrior says that his heart is in anguish, terror fills him, and fear and trembling overwhelm him, and I’m sure he’s thinking, just like me,...can’t life just be worry-free!? It’s with this backdrop that David drops some knowledge and says, “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you...” Now, you might be like me who, when reading this verse, got pretty excited about the thought of casting all of my cares, all of my burdens, all of my issues, all of my fears, all of my haters on God so He can handle them! So He can get my back! So He can bring some justice on my behalf! But,..that’s not what it says. In fact, it’s far from it! It actually says cast your cares on Him and He will “SUSTAIN you”. Yikes! That means I actually have to face it, I actually have to live through it, and I can’t run away from it. That means He won’t just take it away from me! I have to go through it, BUT I don’t have to go through it alone AND I don’t have to go through it with my own strength, my own comfort, or my own peace. Not only is He there He is giving me what I need to get through it.

Application

I don’t know what you might be going through today, but I have good news! Now, it might not be the news you hoped for, but it’s the news that will get you through today. Your problems won’t instantly disappear, your issues won’t spontaneously be gone, but if you choose to cast your cares on to God today He promises to sustain you. He’ll get you through, so don’t lose hope, don’t give up, and don’t quit. May our words echo David’s final words of Psalm 55, “But as for me, I trust in you”. When you feel like you can’t take the drama any more, cast your cares on Him and keep moving forward because He sustains you in it. When you feel like you don’t have the strength, cast your cares on Him and keep moving forward because He strengthens you through it. When you want to quit, cast your cares on Him and keep moving forward because He is with you, even right this moment. He will sustain you...but you have to cast your cares on Him and keep moving forward! The miracle comes as you move forward in faith!

Prayer

Jesus, for those that feel weak, for those that feel like giving up, for those that feel like they can’t take it anymore please sustain them as they cast their cares on You. Grant them the strength to take the next step, and then the next step, and then the next step without giving up. Grant them the grace to forgive, and then forgive again, and then forgive again. Grant them the perspective to endure, and then endure, and then endure some more knowing that You promise to sustain them through whatever they face. May we choose to say, “But as for me, I trust in YOU”, and as we do, may we see You move! In Your name, Amen!
