The Values Of My Heart

by Wayne Cordeiro on September 29, 2020

Today's Reading:
Zechariah 4,5,6; Luke 12

Good morning. Thank you for joining me for devotions. Today I write out of Luke 12 and it is so applicable to what we are going through today. Today is Tuesday, September 29th. We have 36 days till the election. Please be sure to register and vote. And if you are not sure that you are registered, click here to check your status. Remember to vote for the leader who would be like a Cyrus of the Old Testament. Even though they may not be a Christian, they will understand the importance of religious liberty and that leader will protect those rights, not erode them. Jesus said it well in our recent devotion from Luke 9:50 – “He who is not against us is for us.” Be sure who you vote for is for Christ, not against Christ.

Scripture

“Sell your possessions and give to charity. Make yourselves purses that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven … for where your treasure is, there shall your heart be also.” (Luke 12:33-34)

Observation

A purse — what is God talking about? What is He defining? A purse that does not wear out. A “purse” or “wallet” is where you hold your valuables, your credit cards that symbolize your ability to accumulate or purchase, or might give you your net worth.

But purses that do not wear out? — Yes. These are the eternal values that guide my life. Not contemporary ones, not politically correct ones, not societal ones, but eternal values — purses that do not wear out. They don’t change with the culture nor with the rise of another generation. “An unfailing treasure in heaven” … these values are the ones that heaven holds dear — have and always will.

Application

I must revisit often how I think to be sure that how I see things lines up with the way God sees them. Just because I “thought” one way does not mean it is above scrutiny. In fact, all of Luke 12 speaks about where my security lies — not in how much I have stored away, but on trusting in His provisions along the way.

  • I must revisit how I steward my life, how I steward my potential, and how I am stewarding what time I have left on this earth.
  • I must patch up any holes in my purse and match my values and what steers my life — match them up with heaven’s values to be sure they are one and the same.
  • I must check and re-check my core values and core beliefs about:
  1. Money - I make and spend
  2. Principles - I accept or do not accept
  3. Time – How I steward or squander it
  4. Relationships – Who I choose as my friends and counselors.

Our hearts get set on what we value — even if its wrong. Our hearts can’t tell if the values are wrong. Our spirit, our inner man must discern that.

This is why young girls can be so duped by guys with ulterior motives, or why Christian leaders can be deceived into taking immoral stands. If our values are wrong, our hearts will set themselves on these wrong values, and we will hold to them, rationalize them, emote over them, and even make emotional appeals for what’s wrong.

Prayer

Dear Father, it’s easy to think one way and be convinced that it is right. It makes it even harder when the crowd thinks the same, and I can become herd-bound. Help me to constantly check, re-check, and recalibrate my values until there is nothing left of me in them and it is filled with your pleasure and presence!

War Has Been Declared

The enemy will attempt to cause me to doubt who I am, what I believe, what I see, my stand, and even my value before God. In political terms, it is called gaslighting.

They Shall Know That I Am Lord

It sure would have saved them a lot of pain if they simply would have acknowledged the Lord sooner and had given Him credit. But is God so insecure that He gets made if we don’t give Him the credit? I don’t think so.
